About the course

What this course is.

An embedded system acts on its surroundings through sensors and actuators, so a software fault can become a hazard. The iSAQB EMBEDDED curriculum 2021.1 runs from the functional and technical system architecture into the software: safety classification, fault tolerance, real-time design with schedulability analysis, and variability across product variants.

The module has no exam of its own. Attendance earns credit points toward CPSA-A admission; the certification itself is an assignment with an oral exam.

The curriculum expects the foundations of software architecture as taught in CPSA-F accredited trainings, plus practical experience designing and implementing embedded systems.

Experience with safety-relevant or real-time systems helps with some of the concepts.

After the course you can

  • Model a functional architecture and trace event chains through it
  • Derive a technical system architecture and evaluate the alternatives
  • Select a modelling approach, a memory strategy and error handling
  • Run a hazard and risk analysis and classify the safety requirements
  • Apply redundancy and patterns for detecting and recovering from errors
  • Decide between a time-triggered and an event-triggered real-time design
  • Analyse schedulability and worst-case execution time
  • Model variation points and choose when variability is bound

Does the EMBEDDED module have an exam?

The Albion EMBEDDED course has no exam and earns CPSA-A credit points. Certification involves an assignment and an oral exam assessed by experts appointed by the iSAQB, after all admission requirements have been met.

How many credit points does EMBEDDED give?

The Albion EMBEDDED course carries 30 credit points under the iSAQB EMBEDDED curriculum 2021.1: 20 for technical competence, 10 for methodical competence and none for communicative competence.

Do I need CPSA-F to attend?

You do not need a CPSA-F certificate for the Albion EMBEDDED course. The curriculum expects architecture foundations taught in CPSA-F trainings plus practice with embedded systems. A passed Foundation exam is required for CPSA-A admission.

What do I get for attending?

For the Albion EMBEDDED course you receive the Albion certificate of participation from 80% attendance, with a public verification page. It depends on no exam.

Which functional safety standards come up?

The Albion EMBEDDED course covers IEC 61508 and ISO 26262 among other standards. The iSAQB curriculum names further domain-specific safety standards and compares their approaches.

How much of the module is hard real-time?

In the Albion EMBEDDED course, real-time and concurrency is the longest chapter of the iSAQB curriculum: 360 of 1080 recommended minutes. It covers scheduling, priority inversion and worst-case execution time.
