About the course

What this course is.

A functional architecture consists of code: immutable values, pure functions, no encapsulated state. The iSAQB FUNAR curriculum 2023.1 runs from data analysis through combinator models and algebraic structures to macro architecture with monads, events and Model View Update. One chapter is given to an example you change and extend yourself.

The module has no exam and earns credit points toward CPSA-A admission; certification requires an assignment and an oral exam after all admission requirements are met.

Does the FUNAR module have an exam?

The Albion FUNAR course has no exam and earns CPSA-A credit points. Certification involves an assignment and an oral exam assessed by experts appointed by the iSAQB, after all admission requirements have been met.

How many credit points does FUNAR give?

The Albion FUNAR course carries 30 credit points: 20 for technical competence, 10 for methodical and none for communicative. That is the split the iSAQB FUNAR curriculum 2023.1 sets.

Do I need CPSA-F to attend?

You do not need CPSA-F for the Albion FUNAR course: the iSAQB FUNAR curriculum asks for functional programming basics and modelling experience, not for a certification. A passed Foundation exam is required for the CPSA-A certification.

What do I get for attending?

The Albion FUNAR course ends with the Albion certificate of participation, from 80% attendance and with a public verification page. No exam is involved.

Does the curriculum prescribe a programming language?

The iSAQB FUNAR curriculum prescribes no programming language; it names Haskell and Racket as particularly suitable. Choosing a functional language is a learning goal of its own in the Albion FUNAR course.

Do I need experience with object-oriented architecture?

Object-oriented experience is not a prerequisite for the Albion FUNAR course. The iSAQB curriculum does contrast functional with object-oriented architecture, and it assumes most participants know OO.
